Coffee Bags and the History of Coffee

It is said that Coffee (called Qahwa at that time) originated in Ethiopia in the early 1500s as undomesticated coffee beans.  It is believed that coffee drinking began in Yemen.  The name coffee began in the late 1500s.  Coffee Beans have been a largely exported product throughout the years and still is today.

Coffee survived many historical bans.  There were bans initiated in the 16th century in Mecca and Italy.  In the 17th century, bans were put in place in Constantinople.  The 18th century had bans in Sweden and Prussia.  Some throughout history viewed coffee as an aid to drunkenness.  Some said it caused exhaustion, impotence and even went as far as to say it caused paralysis.

The earliest mention of coffee houses was in the 15th century.  It was said that this was a gathering place for men to discuss topics such as philosophy, politics, and religion.  Early coffee houses scared country leaders.  They viewed them as a breeding ground for possible uprisings.  Coffee houses began popping up in the United States before the American Revolutionary war.

Home roasting became popular in the 19th century.  Pre-ground coffee became an option in the early 1900s.  Instant coffee came to be after World War II.

Coffee has been given credit for health benefits throughout the years, but also said to be unhealthy.  Still today scientists are trying to determine if there are health benefits to coffee or not.

Coffee Bags generally replaced coffee cans.

Coffee Bags help keep coffee dry and fresh.  These bags can build up pressure from carbon dioxide, so valves are added to the bags.  The valves are used to reduce the pressure build-up in the bags.  Packaging materials such as polyethylene, composites of cellulose and aluminum make up many types of coffee bags.  These bags are a convenient and efficient way to sell and store coffee.
