In our business, we build custom crates for everything from literal million dollar pieces of artwork and sculpture to irreplaceable antiques, to taxidermy mounts, dollhouses, and TVs. We use shock watches on every single crate we build as a means for protection for ourselves against claims and an extra little something to maybe make the handlers of our crates exercise more caution. These devices have saved us from claims on more than one occasion when we were able to prove the crate was treated more roughly than it should have been through both our origin photos and photos of the serialized shock watch being tripped when the crate reached destination. I highly recommend getting the serialized version of these handy dandy devices. Although I'd like to think everyone is honest, that is just not the case. We have had one occasion where the our crate got to destination and had a different shock watch placed on it in an attempt to get out of a claim. Our procedure of photographing each shock watch serial number and labeling it with the item name saved us from a claim from disreputable folks. There are other 'shock' type devices out there without unique serial numbers, but serialized shock watches are the only way to go in my opinion. These are a worthwhile investment for anyone who regularly ships high dollar freight.
