How do I troubleshoot my Impulse Sealer?

How to Troubleshoot an Impulse Sealer: Step-by-Step Guide

Impulse sealers use quick bursts of electricity to heat up and seal plastic bags. When your heat sealer stops working or makes poor seals, you can usually fix the issue yourself. Most hand and foot-pedal sealers use the exact same basic parts, so this guide works for almost any brand.

Safety First: Always unplug your impulse sealer before opening the machine or touching any internal parts.

Step 1: Check the Wear-and-Tear Parts

Most sealer problems are caused by worn-out PTFE tape or a broken heating wire. These parts will wear out over time and need regular replacement.

The PTFE Covers

  • What to look for: Dark brown or black burn marks along the sealing strip.
  • Why it matters: As the PTFE cover wears down, plastic will start sticking to the wire. If the cover burns all the way through, the wire will touch the metal frame and short out the machine.
  • How to fix it: Remove the screws from the holding plate to change the PTFE top cover. Then inspect the lower PTFE tape for wear, this does not need to be changed as often as the top cover. If the tape needs replacing clean the surface and stick down new insulation tape. Make sure the new tape is straight, centered, and covers the metal surface from end to end so the wire cannot touch the frame.

The Heating Element Wire

  • What to look for: A snapped wire, small burn holes (pitting), or no heat being created at all.
  • Why it breaks: If the thin tape underneath the wire gets a hole in it, electricity leaks into the metal body of the sealer. This instantly burns out the heating wire.
  • How to fix it: Unhook the broken wire from its end posts (which are usually spring-loaded to keep the wire tight) and put in a new one.

Note: High heat settings, thick plastic bags, and heavy daily use will make these parts wear out faster.

Step 2: Test the Electrical Parts

If the wire, PTFE cover, and tape look good but the sealer still will not turn on, test these two main electrical parts.

The Timer Board

The timer controls how long the machine heats up during each seal.

  • How to test it: Plug in the machine and push down the sealing arm. Watch the light on the front panel.
  • The issue: If the light does not turn on when you press the arm down, listen for a click. If you hear a click then it is most likely the timer. If you do not hear a click it is most likely the microswitch.
  • The fix: Unplug the machine, open the body, and swap out the old timer or microswitch with a new one.

The Microswitch

The microswitch is a small button inside the machine that turns on the power only when the sealing arm is fully pushed down.

Sealer Type How it Works How to Adjust It
Hand-Operated A metal tab on the back of the arm pushes the switch button. Remove the bottom cover. Slightly bend the metal tab so it clicks the switch right as the rubber pad touches the wire.
Foot-Pedal An adjustable bolt pushes the switch when you press the pedal. Turn the bolt higher or lower until it firmly clicks the switch at the bottom of your foot press.

  • How to test it: Lower the arm or press the pedal slowly. You should hear a clear "click" sound right before the arm finishes closing.
  • The fix: If you do not hear a click, adjust the metal tab or bolt. If it clicks but the sealer still does not heat and you are seeing a light on the timer, the switch needs to be replaced.
